15 Best Quotes By Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

From dealing with the extremely controversial issue of death penalty to dreaming big, from inculcating a healthy curiosity towards science to reaching out to millions of students, from religion to poetry, one of India's most visionary leaders had something truly inspiring to say about everything.

1. On the youth: My message, especially to young people is to have courage to think differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed. These are great qualities that they must work towards.

2. On leadership: Let me define a leader. He must have vision and passion and not be afraid of any problem. Instead, he should know how to defeat it. Most importantly, he must work with integrity.

3. On religion: For great men, religion is a way of making friends; small people make religion a fighting tool.
4. On corruption: If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.

5. On scientific development: English is necessary as at present original works of science are in English. I believe that in two decades times original works of science will start coming out in our languages. Then we can move over like the Japanese.

6. On hardship: Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success.

7. On students: One of the very important characteristics of a students is to question. Let the students ask questions.

8. On freedom: If we are not free, no one will respect us.

9. On poetry: Poetry comes from the highest happiness or the deepest sorrow.

10. On children: While children are studying to be unique, the world around them is trying by all means to make them like everybody else.

11. On science: Science is global. Einstein's equation E=mc2 has to reach everywhere. Science is a beautiful gift to humanity. We should not distort it. Science does not discriminate between multiple races.

12. On life: Life is a difficult game. You can win it only by retaining your birthright to be a person.

13. On the death penalty: One of the more difficult tasks for me as President was to decide on the issue of confirming capital punishment awarded by courts… to my surprise… almost all cases which were pending had a social and economic bias. This gave me an impression that we were punishing the person who was least involved in the enmity and who did not have a direct motive for committing the crime.

14. On dreaming: Dream, Dream, Dream. Dream transforms in to thoughts. And thoughts result in action.

15. On beauty: I'm not a handsome guy, but I can give my hand to someone who needs help.Beauty is in the heart, not in the face.

IMPORTANCE OF MOTIVATION IN EDUCATION

“I believe in students. Motivation is the most important value. By believing in them, I give them motivation to learn all the time and to take a step forward to the future. The most important thing is to believe themselves.” – Sofija Grabuloska, Macedonia

Motivation is important in getting students to engage in academic activities. It is a critical component of learning. Students who are motivated to learn something use higher cognitive processes in learning about it.  Some basic needs which people must satisfy are food, shelter, love and positive self-esteem. Therefore, motivation to do something may be based on the achievement of these needs. When people feel that they have control over their success in something, then they are more motivated to achieve it. If they feel that they will not have any control in their success then they might not be as motivated to achieve it. People will be motivated to do something based on whether they think they will be successful and be rewarded.
Some people are motivated to learn, while others are motivated to perform well and get a good grades. It is important that teachers should try to convince their students that learning rather than grades are the purpose of academic work. This can be done by emphasizing the interest value and practical importance of the material that the students are studying and by de-emphasizing grades and other rewards. Parents support is essential for this. Students should keep in mind that:
“I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself”(Mikhail Baryshniko).

There is no substitute or short cut for hard work. There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs.

“You have BRAINS in your HEAD,
You have FEET in your SHOES,
You can STEER yourself any
DIRECTION you CHOOSE”.
-Dr Seuss.

Self-motivation is the best way to achieve your goals. It will give you the courage and support to reach in success. The future always belong to the performers. Shakespeare has said, “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.” Do your work sincerely. Sure of your excellent success in every attempt.

7 ipad Applications for Student Creators

Creation-based tasks promote higher-order thinking, encourage collaboration, and connect students to real-world learning. Whether you're teaching in a project-based learning classroom, engaging students with authentic assessments, or committed to pushing students to analyze and synthesize, providing opportunities for creation is a must.
There are a handful of dynamic iPad apps that can turn your students into creators. This doesn't happen magically when they launch the apps. Combined with thoughtful planning, rigorous tasks, and clear expectations, your students can create powerful products that show you -- and the world -- what they've learned.

Book Creator

What better way to have students show their understanding of a topic than to write a book about it? Using Book Creator, students from kindergarten through high school can demonstrate their understanding of butterflies, ancient Rome, or the scientific method by creating their own iBook. This app gives students just enough options to make it friendly for young learners and dynamic for older students.

Shadow Puppet Edu

This narrated slideshow app is perfect for student creators across the content areas. If you've heard me speak about my favorite apps, I'm always stressing quality over quantity. Shadow Puppet Edu can be used for tasks in all subjects and is especially useful in younger grades. The combination of voice recording and images promotes speaking skills and is a great choice for classrooms with students of mixed abilities.

Explain Everything

A list of creation apps would not be complete without a mention of this powerful iPad app. Explain Everything is already used in classrooms across the world because of its creation potential. Students can record their voices in this screencasting app and produce content that demonstrates their understanding of a topic -- and can be easily shared with authentic audiences.

Adobe Voice

Adobe Voice is one of my favorite apps to share with teachers in workshops, because the classroom applications for this storytelling tool are immediately apparent. Users of any age can combine images, icons, text, and music with their own voices. It keeps students in a closed ecosystem where they can easily search for the perfect picture to add to their presentation. The final product is of such a high quality that you might not imagine how easy it is to use until you dive in.

Thinglink

Students live in a world where they must make meaning from a variety of media. Gathering information from websites and videos is the new normal for students, and it's crucial that we prepare them to navigate the digital landscape. Thinglink gives children the ability to layer media on top of an image, turning them into curators of resources. These might be video clips that are connected to information about different parts of the digestive system, or maybe links to deeper information about Brazil placed on top of a map of the country.

Buncee for Edu

With this creation app, students can make a variety of digital creations straight from their iPad. They can build a presentation or tell a story with a single or multiple slides. The interface is kid-friendly, and Buncee for Edu makes it simple to share final creations with classmates or a larger audience.

Pages

Pages has tons of templates for students looking to create a variety of content. Whether they start from scratch or work from a pre-made design, students can make professional-quality products that show what they've learned about a particular topic. This app gives them plenty of options for customizing content -- and it's easy to use on an iPad.

How to Handle Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Children?

“Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder”

ADHD is a developmental disorder characterized by distractibility, hyperactivity, impulsive behaviour, and the inability to remain focused on tasks or activities. Signs of ADHD may begin to appear as early as age two or three, but the symptoms change as adolescence approaches.
Many symptoms, particularly hyperactivity, diminish in early adulthood, but impulsivity and inattention problems remain with up to 50% of ADHD individuals throughout their adult life. Children with ADHD have short attention spans, becoming easily bored or frustrated with tasks. Although they may be quite intelligent, their lack of focus frequently results in poor grades and difficulties in school.
Tips For Handling ADHD Children in School

  • Teachers at schools must understand the struggle a student with ADHD goes through and ensure that an ordered, safe, predictable classroom environment is set for such students.
  •  Educators must establish a courteous, working relationship with the student’s parents. Learn about their child’s strengths, weaknesses, interests and achievements outside the school.
  •  Teachers should be aware about the teaching methods which are most effectively used at home by the parents.
  •  Teachers must communicate often and send encouraging notes home so that the parents are aware about the progress of the child. Teachers must speak to the student individually.
  •  Be very loving , patient and express interest in his or her work at school by observing patiently how he or she learns best.
  •  Decide together on a sign or a code that you can use to remind the child to focus on the task.
  •  Teachers can also use a point system, tokens, stars, or other methods to reinforce and appreciate appropriate behaviour in the classroom.
  •  Notice and provide feedback on any improvement in the areas of behaviour and academics to the parents .Avoid any form of criticizing the child in front of his or her peers.
  •  One very important thing that teachers must do is give directions in simple, concrete terms and simplify instructions, tasks and assignments.
  •  Always get the child to complete one step before introducing the second step. Provide the ADHD student opportunities to display his or her skills, talents or leadership ability in front of the entire class. Include stretching exercises, or movement activity when you notice the child’s attention span is low.
  •  Avoid giving them long home or class assignments.
  •  Seat the ADHD child in close proximity to you and in the area that has the least amount of distractions for example doors, windows and naughty students.
  •  Provide an opportunity for the child to release some energy. For example, have the student assist you in carrying books to the staff room, minding the class, running errands for you etc.
  •  Provide opportunities for physical activity. Choose the hyperactive child to hand out note books ,collect assignments or do other classroom jobs that can help release pent up energy and contribute to his or her feeling of self-worth.

Dear Teachers, ADHD children can perform better within a familiar, consistent, and structured routine at school with positive reinforcements for good behaviour and subtle consequences for bad. Family & classmates and teachers should all be educated on the special needs and behaviour of the ADHD child. Communication between parents and teachers is especially critical to ensuring an ADHD child has an appropriate learning environment. The key factor for handling such children is PATIENCE!!!!
